What Is Partial Knee Replacement?

The knee has three compartments: the inner (medial), outer (lateral), and the area under the kneecap (patellofemoral). In many patients — especially younger ones — only one compartment is severely damaged, while the other two remain healthy.

Partial knee replacement (also called unicompartmental knee replacement or “half knee”) replaces only the damaged compartment. The healthy cartilage, bone, and ligaments in the rest of the knee are left completely untouched.

The advantage: Smaller incision, less blood loss, faster recovery, and a knee that feels more natural — because most of your original joint is still there. If needed in future, conversion to total replacement is straightforward.

Are You a Candidate for Partial Knee Replacement?

Partial knee replacement is appropriate when:

  • Arthritis is limited to one compartment (confirmed on X-ray and examination)
  • The knee ligaments (ACL/PCL) are intact
  • The patient has a reasonably normal range of motion
  • Pain is localised — typically inner or outer side of the knee
  • Non-surgical options have stopped providing adequate relief

Partial replacement is particularly well-suited to younger and more active patients who want to preserve as much of their natural knee as possible.

Is partial knee replacement available in Chandigarh / Mohali?
Yes. Dr. Zubin Mehta performs partial knee replacement at Fortis Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali — approximately 10–15 minutes from central Chandigarh. He also operates at Zirakpur and Pathankot.
How long does partial knee replacement last?
Studies show over 90% of partial knee replacements function well at 10 years. The key is careful patient selection — ensuring the arthritis is truly limited to one compartment before the procedure.
Can partial knee replacement be done robotically?
Yes. The Stryker Mako robotic system — which Dr. Zubin uses — is equally suited to partial and total knee replacement. Robotic assistance is particularly valuable for partial replacement, where precise implant positioning in a limited area is critical.
