Cost is the first question in roughly half my OPD consultations. It’s also one of the questions surgeons are most evasive about, which I find genuinely unhelpful.
A patient trying to decide whether and when to have surgery needs real numbers. “It depends” is not an answer. So I’m going to give you the actual breakdown—what contributes to the cost, what drives variation, and what the realistic range is for hip replacement at Fortis Hospital Mohali. No vagueness.
The Components of Hip Replacement Cost
Total hip replacement cost has four main components. Understanding each one helps you ask the right questions when comparing quotes.
Surgeon’s fee. This covers the primary surgeon and sometimes includes the first assistant and anaesthetist fees depending on the hospital’s billing structure.
Hospital charges. This includes the operating theatre fee, sterile supplies, nursing care, ward or room charges (typically three to five days for a primary hip replacement), blood bank, and post-operative physiotherapy sessions in hospital.

This is where most of the cost variation comes from, and where patients deserve honest information.
At the lower end — typically Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh total — you will generally find cemented implants or uncemented implants with conventional polyethylene bearings from Indian-manufactured or entry-level imported manufacturers. These are not inferior by definition; cemented techniques have a strong long-term evidence base, particularly in older patients. But they are not what I primarily recommend for patients under 70 who are active.
The mid-range — Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh — typically involves cementless implants with highly cross-linked polyethylene or ceramic-on-polyethylene bearings from established international manufacturers. This is the category I work in most frequently. These implants have extensive long-term data, low wear rates, and are appropriate for the majority of patients.
The upper end — Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6.5 lakh for primary hip replacement — includes ceramic-on-ceramic bearing surfaces (the lowest wear rate available, appropriate for very young or very active patients), dual-mobility cups (for patients with higher dislocation risk), and in some cases robotic planning and CT costs.
When a patient shows me a quote for Rs 1.8 lakh from another facility, I ask about the implant. In almost every case, it is a product with no published long-term data. The cost of revision surgery — removing a failed implant and re-doing the entire procedure — starts at Rs 3.5 lakh and goes up. Saving Rs 1.5 lakh on the primary surgery by choosing an inferior implant is not a financially sound decision.
Insurance: What’s Covered
Mediclaim / Private Health Insurance. Most standard health insurance policies cover hip replacement surgery as an inpatient procedure. The coverage typically includes surgeon fees, hospital charges, anaesthesia, and implant costs up to the policy’s sub-limit for implants. Sub-limits vary — some policies cap implant coverage at Rs 1.5 lakh, which means out-of-pocket payment for the difference. Read your policy specifically before surgery.
CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme). CGHS covers hip replacement surgery at approved hospitals. Fortis Mohali is an empanelled CGHS hospital. CGHS patients should confirm empanelment and applicable rates at the time of booking.
Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY). Under PM-JAY, hip replacement surgery is covered under specific package codes. If you are a PM-JAY beneficiary, bring your card to the hospital admission desk — the process is handled directly between the hospital and the insurer.
ESI (Employee State Insurance). ESI beneficiaries are eligible for hip replacement surgery at ESI hospitals. Referral from an ESI facility may be required before accessing care at a private empanelled hospital.
Why Chandigarh and Mohali Are Better Value Than Delhi
I get this comparison question regularly. Patients research hospitals in Delhi or Mumbai and see similar procedure names at similar or higher costs, and wonder whether there’s an advantage to going to a larger city.
For joint replacement specifically, the meaningful factors are: surgeon experience and volume, operating theatre quality, implant choice, and post-operative care. These are not geography-dependent. They are institution and surgeon-dependent.
The practical difference: a patient travelling to Delhi for hip replacement faces additional costs of accommodation for the family during the hospital stay, travel, and the logistical difficulty of 6-week post-operative follow-up at a hospital that is 5 hours away. For a patient from Chandigarh or Punjab, a comparable outcome at Fortis Mohali — 20 minutes from Chandigarh — at a lower total cost including these logistics is the rational choice.
